STOP COMPARING AND START SUCCEEDING!

PRINTER FREINDLY VERSION |

Sometimes we cannot help but wonder what it would be like to walk in someone else’s shoes, or perhaps even fit into their size 4 jeans! This admiration can be the jump start we need to start motivating our own progress; but it can also be what is holding us back.

By constantly trying to live up to someone else’s accomplishments, we are setting ourselves up to fail. Nobody is perfect and the sooner we realize this, the better. Everyone has their own strengths and weakness and it is time to start focusing on what makes us as individuals feel healthy and confident.

Comparing our weight loss is especially dangerous. We may feel depressed when someone else loses weight. Instead of feeling happy for them, we feel anxious and frustrated that it wasn’t us.

It is not an easy task to start owning your goals, but it is necessary. We may be too busy monitoring everyone else that we do not stop to appreciate what our body and mind are capable of.

Here are five tips to help you stop worrying about who you aren’t, and start embracing who you are and what you can do:

1. Learn to love failure. It is okay to not be perfect, in fact our mistakes are often more valuable than our successes. If you have a set back with your diet, try and figure out what triggered it so next time you can be prepared.

2. Give compliments to other’s for a job well done. If you have a friend that lost weight and looks great, you should let them know. Giving positive feedback allows other’s to feel comfortable doing the same for you!

3. Compliment yourself. Keep a record of all the positive actions you have taken toward your goal. By actually seeing your progress you can really appreciate your efforts!

4. Take an hour a day to just be by yourself. By not watching television, reading magazines or searching the internet, you can start reflecting on your own life. Try taking a walk or do yoga to really connect your mind and body.

5. Stop comparing yourself to the accomplishments of others. Instead, compare your attitude to theirs. Notice how that person you admire stays positive and is committed to their personal goals. Now, use their attitude to motivate you into working just as hard.

These tips will make it easier to stay confident and less likely to compare!
